It is Pride Month but this year's celebrations in Nevada may be tempered by state and federal actions prompting concern from the transgender community.

This week, Gov. Joe Lombardo vetoed a pair of bills. One would have required jails
to create policies to protect the health and safety of transgender people behind bars. The other would've ensured medical professionals' ability to provide gender transition services without facing punitive consequences.

On the national level, the Trump administration is moving forward with its ban on transgender people in the military, even as litigation proceeds.

Martha Gomez, director of workforce development for the nonprofit Trans Can Work, said the attacks from all sides hurt society as a whole.

"Of course, transgender are at the forefront of a lot of those attacks," Gomez observed. "But the truth is that these DEI cuts, they hurt all of us as a nation, to not have opinions outside of just one."

Military branches are also changing the names of transgender members back to their birth names. Gomez noted her organization encourages all employers to consider the potential harm of such steps and to make sure their health care policies and legal paperwork are inclusive.

Nevada has a pay equity law on the books, which aims to ensure fair compensation and prohibits companies from using a person's salary history to determine pay.

Despite state law prohibiting employment discrimination based on gender identity or expression, Gomez stressed employers need to ensure compensation is not only fair, but based on a job well done.

"Compared to a white 'cis' man, gay or lesbian women tend to make about 89 cents of that dollar," Gomez pointed out. "Transgender people make about 69 cents, and Black transgender women only make 43 cents of that dollar."

Transgender, gender-diverse and intersex individuals continue to face high rates of economic insecurity, job discrimination and barriers to stable employment.
