Today is International Women's Day, and one Nevada attorney sees it as an opportunity to remind women of their rights.

Las Vegas attorney Adriana Pereyra will hold a free discussion on Saturday that she said is not only about offering support to women but empowering them as well.

Pereyra, originally from Mexico, called herself an advocate for equal rights and said she's pleased to see more women occupying positions of power. However, she contended that more progress is needed. And she wants women who find themselves in abusive or toxic situations to know that help is out there.

"If they want to leave, or how they can be safer in a situation, how to navigate through the situation," she said. "There's a lot of resources out there. They're not alone. It's not something to be ashamed of, when we need help."

Pereyra said even when a situation seems overwhelming or hopeless, there are individuals and organizations willing to assist. She said she hopes to be an example of determination for other women, especially as a Latina, an immigrant and the first to graduate from college in her family.

The event is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday at the Canyon Gate Apartments, 2200 S. Fort Apache Road in Las Vegas.

Pereyra said she fears that many women, from all walks of life, continue to endure mental and emotional abuse - in relationships or on the job - and don't realize it's an offense that can and should be reported to law enforcement.

"Even if you're undocumented, you have the right to report this," she said. "You have the right to not be constantly tortured or threatened with your life - or with your finances, or with your children being taken away. That is definitely one area that I see a lot - people not knowing that they have those rights."

According to the Nevada Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence, the Silver State ranks among the top ten states for domestic violence-related homicide.
